The engine is out. Actually, almost everything is out. I just have to unhook the doors and remove the last of the underseal and oil, and it's off to the blaster's! I have poked the boot floor and battery compartments enough to be sure of avoiding bad surprises, but it is kind of sad seeing her stripped this way. At least it can only get better from this point on. Unless I decide on stripping the engine to. If I start to consider it, please stop me! The plan is to remove rust and grime to make it look good, and to replace seals and gaskets for the easily-removed parts. Plus a timing chain change, and a look at the clutch. It is probably best replaced, considering the work involved in changing it later, but if it looks new enough I guess I can buy something nicer for the car instead.
